The student spaces are located entirely within the large wooden module, whereas the staff spaces are located in the concrete cube

The studio space features a texture of 'erratic' movement, one that I think mirrors my movement through any design process. It's liable to change at any second, and placing it in a studio is a reminder that that's okay. The studio doubles as the computer labs because I, as the dean, have decided to give everyone a state of the art laptop.

The arms extend between the far end of the UNSW side of the building, giving direct access to the stairwell, and the gallery space. Its movement is best seen here.

Clockwise from top left: Gallery, General Staff/Academic Research Space, Workshop, Library, Academic Offices, Student Meeting Room, General Staff Office.

EXP3 - Lumion Second Draft

I chose to look at Diller and Scofidio's 'Slow House' when setting a precedent for my school of architecture. I was initially intrigued by the concept of expansion throughout the plan, and more broadly, the idea of a journey.

The drawing on the top right of the page is the plan-to-section modification I came up with.

The first implementation of this design was in the general form of this space, intended to be the design studio, following the curvature. I decided not to include the skylights on the top as they seemed unnecessary given the huge window.

I took the skylight design and placed them on top of the moving arms. Given the fact that they're essentially very long closed tunnels, they need to get light from somewhere.

This gif shows the major moving aspect of my school of architecture, and its path of movement. They are two large bending arms, approximately 60m long each. It changes between providing access solely to the bulk of the architecture school to creating a bridge over Anzac Parade to the top of NIDA, where I intend on further building upon the school.

Overall view of the site, showing where the two workshops are relative to each other and the showroom.

View from one corner of the underground workshop, showing the protruding concrete blocks hanging overhead, as well as the exposed earth in the gaps.

View from above the above ground workshop, showing its site and its view of the underground space.

First draft model of the underground workspace, featuring detailing on two of the blocks. It became apparent that such details in conjunction with the use of textures would make the architecture seem far too busy and overwhelming, and I feel that the 'Heavy' texture better conveys the concept of 'grime'.

Further developed underground model, showing the completed stairwell outside of its final context.

Early draft of the above ground space, featuring 2D sections from one of my drawings.

Further developed above ground space, before glass, ramps and stairs were added.
